Did You Know?

Current state dual enrollment options are not equivalent for unique learners! Florida state colleges offer dual enrollment opportunities to students who meet their admission criteria. This applies to all Florida students! However, dual enrollment ends as students approach age 19.

For unique ability students, this cut-off is a bit unfair as they can extend their high school education until age 22 under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). If a FES-UA recipient, these students remain eligible for the FES-UA until age 22. However, if they wish to continue taking college courses after age 19, they must graduate early and become tuition-paying students, which ends their eligibility for the FES-UA scholarship. This means that these unique ability students would forgo scholarship funds they would have received between age 19 and 22 ($27,300 or more)!

At the same time, the average in-state tuition at a Florida state college is approximately $3,840 per year (or $384 per 3-credit hour course). This cost would be one that families of unique ability learners now have to cover without FES-UA scholarship support.

This is fundamentally unfair to unique ability students. Under current policy, these students, who are eligible for continued financial support and additional learning opportunities until they reach 22, are forced into early graduation if they choose a college path. This requirement places an undue burden on unique learners and their families, undermining the intent of programs established under the IDEA Act, which is meant to ensure that every student has access to the resources they need, regardless of their challenges. By forcing an early exit from scholarship eligibility, the current dual enrollment model inadvertently penalizes these learners, limiting their chance to build a more robust academic foundation and easing the financial pressure on their families. In essence, this policy creates an additional hurdle for a group of students who already face unique challenges, preventing them from taking full advantage of extended educational support that is crucial to fostering their long-term success.

Sunshine State Homeschoolers has formed a partnership with ASU to help! By enrolling in ASU Universal Learners college courses through our partnership, parents not only save money compared to average tuition costs and the self-pay program, but they also ensure that unique learners can continue benefiting from their scholarship support until they are ready to fully graduate from high school. This pathway offers a more flexible, cost-effective means of bridging the gap between high school and college. And, even better, because the FES-UA can be used for postsecondary expenses, our partnership courses are eligible for direct pay!
